About
The United Nations Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (UNDPPA) is one of the departments of the Secretariat, responsible for assisting the Secretary-General and the Security Council in their efforts to “prevent deadly conflict and build sustainable peace around the world.” The department, which was established on 1 March 1992, has now been reformed in the year 2019, with new advancements made in its peace and security infrastructure.
UNDPPA has worked extensively across East Asia and the Pacific, aiming to prevent the escalation of tensions and to support sustainable peacebuilding in a region marked by geopolitical rivalries, internal unrest, and post-conflict transitions. The department has contributed to addressing long-standing disputes and promoting inclusive political processes, particularly in areas affected by separatist movements, fragile governance, and ethnic tensions. UNDPPA also plays a vital role in facilitating dialogue, supporting democratic institutions, and strengthening regional cooperation to mitigate emerging threats. Its efforts in East Asia and the Pacific continue to be essential in fostering political stability, enhancing conflict prevention mechanisms, and reinforcing long-term peace and development.
